Evolve Phaze remote explained: control, modes and confidence

Understanding the Evolve Phaze remote: how it works and why it matters

The remote is the most important interface between you and your board. Get it right and everything feels intuitive. Get it wrong and even the best hardware in the world will frustrate you. The Phaze Bluetooth remote is what Evolve ships with every current board in the lineup, and once you understand how it works, your riding improves alongside your confidence.

This article breaks down what the Phaze does, how the modes and trigger system work in practice, and why the design choices behind it translate directly into a better ride.

What the Phaze remote actually is

The Phaze is a CNC aluminium-bodied remote with a dual trigger design. One trigger accelerates, one brakes. That separation is deliberate. On cheaper remotes, a single dial or joystick handles both, which creates ambiguity at speed. With two distinct triggers, your fingers are always in the right position and your brain does not have to translate input under pressure.

The LCD screen displays your ride data in real time: speed, battery level, mode and distance. It is compact enough to palm naturally without adjusting your grip mid-ride.

There are two versions of the Phaze remote. The Bluetooth version connects to all current Evolve boards including the Diablo, Fusion, Stoke X, Renegade and GTR. The WiFi version is only for older GT and GTX boards. If you are buying a new board or replacing a lost remote today, the Phaze Bluetooth is the one you want.

The trigger system in practice

The dual trigger design rewards good technique. Your index finger sits on the throttle, your middle finger covers the brake. This mirrors the muscle memory most riders develop naturally over time, which means new riders build good habits from the start rather than unlearning bad ones later.

Braking on an Evolve board is regenerative, meaning the motors push energy back into the battery as you slow down. The Phaze translates your brake trigger input smoothly into that regenerative braking curve. Squeeze gradually and you decelerate in a controlled way. Squeeze harder and it bites with authority. There is no lag between your input and the board's response, which matters most when you are navigating a pedestrian crossing in Wellington or slowing for a roundabout in Hamilton.

The trigger resistance is calibrated to avoid accidental inputs. You will not blip the throttle by loosening your grip, and you will not brake unexpectedly from vibration on a rougher sealed path.

Riding modes and what they change

The Phaze gives you access to the board's riding modes directly from the remote. Most boards in the current lineup offer ECO, SPORT, CORSA and a custom mode that you configure through the Evolve Explore app.

  • ECO reduces available power and limits top speed. It extends range and makes throttle response gentler, which is where most riders should start.
  • SPORT opens up more torque and a higher speed ceiling while still keeping acceleration manageable. It is the mode most commuters settle into.
  • CORSA is full power. Every watt of the motor output is available, acceleration is immediate and the board demands your full attention. It is not a mode for busy footpaths.
  • Custom lets you dial in acceleration curves and braking response to suit your weight, terrain and preference. For riders in Queenstown dealing with steep descents or Auckland riders who commute across mixed terrain, custom mode gives you a setup that no preset can fully replicate.

Switching between modes is done with a button press on the remote. You do not need to stop or pull out your phone. The LCD confirms which mode you are in so there is no guessing.

Pairing and connectivity

The Phaze pairs via Bluetooth and maintains a reliable connection at the ranges you will ride within. Evolve has engineered the pairing sequence to be board-specific, which means your remote will not accidentally connect to another Evolve board nearby. That is a small detail but it matters when you are riding in a group.

If you do need to re-pair, the process is straightforward and documented in the help centre. There is no long menu navigation or factory reset process required for a standard re-pair.

The remote charges via USB-C, and battery life is long enough that most riders charge it once a week or less depending on session frequency.

Why the remote builds confidence

New riders often focus on the board's power figures when they are deciding what to buy. What they underestimate is how much the remote contributes to feeling in control. An imprecise remote makes a great board feel unpredictable. A well-designed one makes a powerful board feel approachable.

The Phaze builds confidence in two ways. First, the physical design keeps your hands in a natural position. Second, the mode system lets you grow into the board rather than being overwhelmed by it from the first ride. A rider starting in ECO on a flat section of Christchurch's paths will feel very different to the same rider a month later running SPORT on a coastal route. Both experiences are correct for where that person is in their development.

The LCD also gives you live feedback that helps you learn. Watching your speed in real time, understanding how hard you are pushing the battery and tracking your distance all develop your awareness of the board as a system rather than just a piece of gear you stand on.

Replacing or upgrading your remote

If you have an older Evolve board running the R2 remote, you can upgrade. GTR Series 1 and Stoke Series 1 boards are compatible with the Phaze Bluetooth. GT and GTX boards use the Phaze WiFi version instead.

The Phaze Bluetooth remote is available directly from Evolve online, with delivery across New Zealand. It ships with the leash and USB-C cable included.

If you are buying a current board new, it will arrive with the Phaze already in the box. But knowing what you have, how to use it and why it was designed the way it was will change how quickly you progress.

Getting the most out of it

A few habits make a measurable difference with the Phaze:

  • Always attach the wrist leash before riding. If you fall and release the remote, the leash cuts throttle automatically.
  • Start each session in ECO until you have a feel for the surface. Move up to SPORT once you are comfortable.
  • Use the Explore app to set up a custom mode that matches your commute or favourite route. The time spent configuring it is worth it.
  • Check the remote battery before long rides. The LCD will show a low indicator but it is better to charge proactively than to lose connectivity mid-session.

The Phaze is not complicated. But like any good tool, understanding it properly makes you more capable with it. Give it a few sessions and it stops feeling like a controller and starts feeling like an extension of your hands.
