Most riders who switch to all-terrain wheels describe the same moment: the first time they roll over something that would have thrown them off a street setup, and nothing happens. No jolt, no sketch, just rolling. That is what 7-inch pneumatic tyres do at a fundamental level. They change what the road can do to you.
But there is more to it than just absorbing bumps. Bigger wheels affect how a board accelerates, how it brakes, how it carves and how confident you feel at speed. If you are considering the switch, here is what actually changes.
The physics behind the size
At 175mm in diameter, the 7-inch tyres fitted to boards like the Diablo Bamboo All Terrain are roughly twice the contact area of a standard 97mm urethane wheel. That size difference matters for a few reasons.
A larger wheel rolls over surface irregularities rather than into them. Where a smaller wheel drops into a crack or catches on a pebble, the bigger diameter means the tyre is already past the obstacle before it can transfer that energy into the deck. On smooth sealed roads, the rolling resistance of a pneumatic tyre is higher than urethane. Street wheels will always feel faster and snappier on clean asphalt. If your riding is exclusively on sealed surfaces, the Diablo Bamboo Street is the more efficient tool.

Where it makes a real difference in New Zealand
New Zealand's riding environments are well suited to all-terrain setups. Auckland's outer suburbs mix sealed paths with grass verges and gravel service roads. Wellington's waterfront is smooth, but get beyond the CBD and you encounter rougher chip seal and poorly maintained paths that will punish urethane wheels. In Christchurch, the flat grid of the city sounds ideal for street wheels, but the post-earthquake infrastructure is uneven in places, and the wider riding network extends to packed gravel tracks.
Hamilton and Queenstown represent opposite ends of the spectrum. Hamilton is flat and relatively smooth, where the AT setup is more about comfort than necessity. Queenstown is the opposite: gravel trails, short climbs, and varying terrain where 45%+ hill gradient capability and proper traction genuinely matter. Street or all-terrain: how to decide
If you ride mostly on sealed roads and want maximum range and top-end feel, the street configuration is the right call. If your riding crosses into unsealed paths, grass, gravel or anywhere that is not consistently smooth asphalt, the AT setup opens up the board considerably.
The 2-in-1 option exists for riders who want both and are willing to swap wheel sets depending on the day. It requires tools and some time, but it is a legitimate approach if your riding genuinely varies between environments.
For most riders who want a single setup that handles New Zealand's mixed terrain confidently, the Diablo Bamboo All Terrain is the most capable version of the board without needing to carry a second set of wheels.
