How to keep your electric skateboard bearings running like new
Bearings are one of those components that most riders ignore until something goes wrong. The board starts sounding like a wet gravel path. The wheels feel sluggish off the throttle. There is a faint grinding that was not there last month. By that point, the damage is usually already done, and a five-minute job has turned into a parts replacement.
The good news is that bearing maintenance is genuinely straightforward. It does not require a workshop, specialist tools or much time. What it does require is doing it before the symptoms appear, not after.
Why bearings take a beating on electric skateboards
Electric skateboard bearings work harder than most people expect. You are not just rolling on flat, clean asphalt at walking pace. You are accelerating hard, braking hard, carrying the weight of the board and the rider, and doing all of that repeatedly over surfaces that are rarely as smooth as they look.

How often you actually need to do this
There is no single right answer here, because it depends entirely on how and where you ride. A rough guide that works for most riders: inspect and clean your bearings every four to six weeks of regular use. If you ride in wet conditions, dusty environments or off-road terrain more than occasionally, do it monthly.
The signs that tell you maintenance is overdue are not subtle. Spin a wheel by hand after you have removed it from the board. A healthy bearing spins smoothly and quietly for several seconds. If it stops quickly, makes noise, or feels rough or gritty underfoot, it needs attention. Do not wait for the second or third sign before acting.
What you need before you start
You do not need much. A bearing puller makes removal cleaner and avoids damage, though a flathead screwdriver and a little patience works in a pinch. You will need bearing cleaner or isopropyl alcohol, a small container to soak and agitate the bearings in, and fresh bearing lubricant. Avoid using WD-40 as a lubricant. It displaces moisture well but does not provide lasting protection and can actually wash out the grease you want to keep inside the bearing.

Cleaning the bearings properly
Remove the wheels and press out the bearings carefully. If they have shields, pop the shields off gently before soaking. Place the bearings in your cleaning solution and agitate them well, either by shaking the container or spinning the bearings by hand while submerged. You will see the fluid turn dark as grime comes free. Let them soak for a few minutes, then agitate again.
Dry them thoroughly before lubricating. Any moisture left inside the bearing will cause corrosion. A quick blast with a can of compressed air speeds this up considerably, but air drying for thirty minutes works too. Spin them before lubricating to confirm the grit has cleared. If they still feel rough, repeat the soak.
Apply two to three drops of lubricant per bearing. Spin the bearing by hand to work the lubricant through, then replace the shields if you removed them. Reinstall and move on.
Replacing versus cleaning
Bearings are consumables. Even with good maintenance, they wear out. If a bearing still feels rough or makes noise after a thorough clean and fresh lubricant, replace it. Running worn bearings stresses the motors and drive components more than it should, and the cost of new bearings is minor compared to a motor service.

If you are running all-terrain tyres, tyre pressure is part of your maintenance routine whether you think of it that way or not.
