How to clean your electric skateboard properly
Most riders think about cleaning their board after something goes wrong. A bearing starts grinding, a wheel feels sluggish, or the deck looks like it spent a week under a car. The truth is that cleaning is maintenance, not a rescue operation, and the boards that last longest are the ones that get consistent attention rather than occasional panic washes.
Electric skateboards are more sensitive to neglect than traditional boards. You have motors, belts, drive gears, bearings and a battery enclosure all working in close proximity to the ground. Dirt does not just look bad. It works its way into the things that move and shortens their life considerably.
What you are actually protecting against
The enemy is not just mud. Fine grit is the real problem. When dust and road grime mix with belt grease or bearing lubricant, they form a compound that wears components faster than riding on clean, dry surfaces ever would. Riders who regularly use their boards along Auckland's waterfront paths or through the dusty gravel edges of Wellington's hill routes will recognise this quickly. The boards that look clean usually run cleaner too.
Water is the other concern. Current Evolve boards are not waterproof. Newer models have improved sealing around the battery enclosure, but that protection has limits. Riding in wet conditions and then storing the board without drying it properly creates the conditions for corrosion inside the battery housing and around electrical connections. It is worth taking seriously even if the board seems to handle light splashes without complaint.
The tools worth having before you start
You do not need a lot. A soft bristle brush, a dry microfibre cloth, a can of compressed air, a Y-tool and a bottle of bearing lubricant cover most situations. Some riders add a small plastic pry tool for getting into tight spaces around the motor mounts. Avoid anything that sprays water directly at the board. Garden hoses, pressure washers and even wet rags wrung directly onto the deck are all more risk than they are worth.
For all-terrain setups specifically, a tyre pressure gauge is useful to keep handy. It is not a cleaning tool, but checking tyre pressure after a muddy session is a good habit that is easy to fold into the routine.
Start from the top and work down
Begin with the deck. Grip tape collects grit over time and can become slippery if it builds up enough. A stiff bristle brush swept in short strokes from nose to tail lifts surface dirt without tearing the grip. For stubborn patches, a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cloth works well. Let the deck dry fully before riding.
Move to the enclosure next. Wipe the underside with a dry cloth and use compressed air to clear any debris from the vents and seams. Do not use a damp cloth here. If the enclosure looks like it has taken a hard impact or the screws appear to have shifted, it is worth removing them carefully and checking the seal. A compromised enclosure is far more serious than one that just looks dirty.
Wheels and bearings deserve more attention than they usually get
Wheels can be removed with a Y-tool and wiped down individually. Check the urethane for flat spots, cuts or uneven wear while you have them off. Street wheels that have developed a slight flat on one side will transmit a faint vibration through the board that is easy to dismiss and easy to fix. Rotating wheels diagonally between front and rear every few sessions evens out wear considerably.
Bearings are where most of the performance degradation happens invisibly. Spin each bearing with your finger after removing the wheel. A healthy bearing spins freely and quietly. One that grinds, catches or stops suddenly needs attention. Remove the shield carefully with a thin tool, clean the bearing with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry completely and apply a thin layer of quality bearing lubricant before reassembly. It takes about fifteen minutes per wheel and makes a noticeable difference to how the board rides.
Belts and drive gears need a different approach
Belts are consumable parts, but they wear much faster when they are caked in grit. Use a dry brush to clear debris from between the teeth on the drive gear, then run the brush along the belt itself. Look for fraying on the edges, cracking between the teeth or any sign that the belt has stretched unevenly. A belt that looks worn but has not snapped yet will snap at the worst possible moment, typically mid-ride on a long descent somewhere between Queenstown and the nearest bus stop.
Do not oil belts. Lubricant attracts dust and accelerates the buildup you are trying to prevent. Keep them clean and dry, and replace them when they show visible wear rather than waiting for a failure.
Motors: clean but do not overcomplicate it
The motors on a brushless sensored setup are largely self-contained, but the exterior collects dust and debris that can affect heat dissipation. A dry brush and compressed air around the motor casing is sufficient for routine cleaning. If a motor has been submerged or soaked, let it dry completely before running the board. Running a wet motor under load causes damage that is not always immediately obvious but shows up as reduced torque and shortened lifespan over time.
If you notice a change in motor sound after a ride through rough terrain, particularly anything grinding or irregular, inspect the area around the motor mount for stones or debris caught between the motor and the drive gear. It happens more often than riders expect on trail rides.

A brief wipe-down after every off-road session takes two minutes and keeps the electronics running at the temperatures they were designed for.
At 14.35 kg with AT wheels mounted, it is a board that is built to absorb serious terrain. The 45 per cent hill gradient rating and 120 kg max load mean the components are working hard. Clean belts, maintained bearings and properly inflated tyres at 40 to 45 PSI are what keep those numbers feeling confident rather than theoretical.
How often is often enough
A light wipe-down after every ride and a thorough clean every five to ten sessions is a reasonable rhythm for most riders. If you have been through mud, wet grass or sandy paths, do not wait for your next scheduled clean. Grit that dries into drive gear teeth and belt teeth overnight is harder to remove the next morning than it was when you got home.
Riders in Christchurch dealing with fine limestone dust from trail edges, or Auckland riders picking up salt air near the coast, may want to be more consistent than that. The environmental conditions where you ride change how quickly the board accumulates the kind of contamination that shortens component life.
A board that is maintained properly does not just last longer. It rides better. The difference between a board with clean bearings, fresh belt tension and properly seated wheels and one that has been neglected for a few months is real and immediate. You feel it in the first push of the throttle.
